A Love Story at Edinburgh Castle

Mary, Queen of Scots and Lord Darnley (1565-1567)

Mary, Queen of Scots fell deeply in love with the charming but arrogant Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley. Against the advice of her nobles, she married him in 1565 at Holyrood Palace, believing they would rule Scotland together. However, Darnley soon grew jealous and power-hungry, demanding the crown matrimonial (equal rule). His resentment focused on David Rizzio, Mary’s private secretary and close confidant.

In March 1566, Darnley and a group of conspirators brutally murdered Rizzio in front of a pregnant Mary at Holyrood. Her son, James VI, was born at Edinburgh Castle on 19 June 1566, securing the Stuart dynasty. Though Mary later forgave Darnley for political reasons, their love was beyond repair. In 1567, Darnley was mysteriously murdered in an explosion at Kirk o’ Field, with evidence suggesting Mary’s third husband, James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell, was involved. Many suspected Mary knew of the plot, and it led to her downfall and eventual execution in England. Read more about Edinburgh castle…
