I have been traveling solo around the Highlands and Islands for the past year and it has been wonderful. I am a 76 year old woman and have no problem traveling alone in the Highlands and Islands. I rent a car and off I go.....have driven 8000 miles since last April. I usually stay in cottages so I can work and spread out as I am working on a photo book. I have privacy, all the amenities, can cook, do laundry, etc. I have met wonderful people who are always willing to chat and offer help and advice.
