Climbing to the Top of a Scottish Icon

The National Wallace Monument stands on Abbey Craig, overlooking Stirling. It was built to honour Sir William Wallace, the Scottish hero who led the fight for independence in the late 13th century. The tower, completed in the 19th century, sits near the site of his famous Battle of Stirling Bridge (1297). Inside, visitors can explore three exhibition galleries, where they can see historic artefacts, including the Wallace Sword, a massive two-handed weapon believed to have belonged to Wallace himself.

Climbing the 246-step spiral staircase to the top is a challenge, but the effort is well worth it. From the Crown of the monument, you get stunning views across Stirling Castle, the Ochil Hills, and the winding River Forth. On a clear day, you can even see as far as Ben Lomond in the distance. It’s the perfect place to take in Scotland’s incredible landscape and reflect on the history that shaped the nation.

Cambuskenneth Abbey was founded in about 1140 by King David I to serve Stirling Castle, which stands a short distance to the west. It was the scene of Robert the Bruce’s parliaments in 1314 and 1326, and the burial place of James III and Margaret of Denmark in the 1480s.

Dumyat is the fierce little cub of the Ochils, far lower than the main range but rocky packed with character. It has a superb position on the fringe of the range overlooking Stirling and the Central Belt; the views are superb. A perfect first hillwalk on a fine day, this route avoids the very steep slopes on the southern flank of the hill.
