Could You Live Here?
Scotland's most isolated mainland village, Inverie is a small village on the Knoydart Peninsula in the Scottish Highlands
“We’ve got a majestic landscape—wide open spaces, good fresh air, changing seasons. And we're very fortunate, we've got a complete array of wildlife on our doorstep—otters and badgers and pine martens, dolphins in the water, eagles and seals. It's a very symbiotic relationship with both nature and the animals.” - Jackie Robertson, a long-time resident and former owner of The Old Forge pub

Could You Live Here?
Inverie, located on the Knoydart Peninsula in the Scottish Highlands, holds the distinction of being Britain's most isolated mainland village. Accessible only by a 17-mile hike over rugged terrain or a 7-mile ferry ride from Mallaig, Inverie offers a unique blend of seclusion and community spirit. The village is home to The Old Forge, the UK's most remote mainland pub, which became community-owned in 2022. This establishment serves as a central hub for locals and visitors alike, offering hearty meals, local ales, and a warm welcome amidst the stunning backdrop of Loch Nevis.
To reach Inverie from Glasgow or Edinburgh, you can take the train to Mallaig or drive along the scenic A830, known as the "Road to the Isles," passing through picturesque Highland towns such as Fort William, Glenfinnan, and Arisaig before arriving at Mallaig. From Mallaig, the ferry to Inverie provides breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes. For the more adventurous, hiking routes from Glenfinnan or Kinloch Hourn offer challenging treks through some of Scotland's most remote and beautiful terrains. Whether arriving by sea or foot, a visit to Inverie promises an unforgettable experience steeped in natural beauty and Highland hospitality.
