In Scotland, the Loch Ness Monster might be the stuff of legends—but there’s another creature stealing hearts (and camera time). With their shaggy ginger coats, long horns, and sweeping fringe (or “bangs” if you're across the pond), Highland coos get more photos than even the castles. They look like they’ve wandered out of a fairytale—or maybe a rock band—and we absolutely adore them.

Highland coos are one of the oldest cattle breeds in the world, dating back to at least the 6th century. Bred to survive the wild winds and cold rain of the Highlands, they’re tough, hardy, and surprisingly gentle. Their thick double-layered coat keeps them warm without needing to bulk up, so they’re leaner than most cows and famously low-maintenance. They’ve even got a built-in fringe to keep the worst of the weather—and the midges—out of their eyes. Smart, right?

But they’re not just cute. Highland coos are important to Scotland’s rural life and history. They’ve helped farmers for centuries, their beef is prized for its flavour and health benefits, and their calm nature makes them a favourite with visitors. They also help manage the land, grazing on rough grasses and supporting natural biodiversity. In other words, they’re more than just a pretty face—though we’re not denying they’re very photogenic.
