Scotland’s Mysterious Underworld
Smoo Cave is one of Scotland’s most fascinating natural wonders, and it’s just off the NC500, making it the perfect stop on a road trip through the north. This massive sea cave, shaped by both the sea and a freshwater river, has an entrance so big it looks like something from a fantasy film. Smoo Cave’s name comes from the Old Norse word Smuga, meaning “hiding place” or “hole,” a nod to its ancient past and the mysteries that lie within. Inside, you’ll find eerie rock formations, hidden chambers, and even a waterfall crashing down into the depths. You can explore the first part on foot, but if you really want to experience its mystery, take the boat tour deeper into the cave’s darker corners.
The area around Smoo Cave is just as incredible. Balnakeil Beach is nearby, with its white sand and sweeping views, while Faraid Head offers a windswept coastal walk with a chance to spot seabirds and maybe even a seal or two. If you’re up for an adventure, head to Cape Wrath, the most north-westerly point of mainland Britain, with its towering cliffs and historic lighthouse. For a quieter moment, Loch Eriboll offers stunning scenery and a bit of wartime history. With so much to see, this part of Scotland is more than just a stopover—it’s a highlight of the journey. Is it time for a road trip on the North Coast 500?
