The Last of the Mohicans: Scotland’s Royal Scots Dragoon Guards
The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (RSDG), Scotland's oldest and only regular cavalry regiment, has been a significant part of military history and Pipe music since its establishment in 1678. Their rendition of "Amazing Grace" in 1972 became a global sensation, topping charts worldwide. After serving as a tank regiment for 75 years, the RSDG has transitioned to Light Cavalry and relocated from Germany to Fife.
The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, the preferred Light Cavalry Regiment, form the primary armoured force for the 7th Armoured Brigade, famously known as The Desert Rats. Currently, they are in the process of training for their new position at the helm of the British Army's structure. Their main role will be as a mounted combat unit, but they will also collaborate with other international armies globally.
"Dougie MacLean's album from 1990, "The Search", included his renowned piece "The Gael". This piece was later adapted by Trevor Jones and used as the primary theme for The Last of the Mohicans (1992). MacLean's debut album featured "Caledonia", a tribute to Scotland's extensive military history.
The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, as Scotland's oldest and sole regular cavalry regiment, have been a key part of the nation's history. They will maintain their proud service to their country in their new position as Light Cavalry.
