And another four of our gorgeous places made Big 7 Travel’s ‘20 Most Beautiful Villages in the UK’ list.

Ullapool’s history stretches back thousands of years, with evidence of human settlements along the coast and in some cases on the roadside. Stone circular foundations can still be seen around Rhue and other local sites, some dating as far back as two thousand years. Brochs (old stone forts) are also still in existence at Dun Logie and Rhiroy on Lochside, as well as Strathkanaird, Coigach and Assynt.

About a mile north of the village is Dun Canna, an ancient fort system estimated to be around 2,500 years old. At low tide, it’s even possible to spot a Viking fish trap that was built in the 8th Century in the bay below.
