The Secret Behind Rosslyn Chapel

Rosslyn Chapel, founded in 1446 by Sir William St Clair, is one of Scotland’s most mysterious and intricately carved buildings. Located in the village of Roslin, just south of Edinburgh, the chapel was originally named the Collegiate Chapel of St Matthew. Its purpose was religious, built for daily prayers to be said for the souls of the Sinclair family. What sets it apart, however, is its astonishing stonework—hundreds of carvings cover every surface, blending Christian symbols with pagan imagery, mythical beasts, and even what some believe to be depictions of New World plants carved before Columbus's voyage.

While Rosslyn became globally famous after The Da Vinci Code, many of the sensational claims in the novel are fiction. There’s no historical evidence that the chapel houses the Holy Grail, Knights Templar treasure, or secret vaults beneath the floor. That said, its beauty and the sheer mystery of its carvings have inspired centuries of speculation. From the Apprentice Pillar’s tragic legend to the echoes of lost rituals, Rosslyn remains a place where history, faith, and imagination meet in stone.
