What’s Hidden on Calton Hill?

Calton Hill is one of the best spots in Edinburgh to take in the view. From its summit, you can see the whole city, Arthur’s Seat, and the Firth of Forth. It’s home to the National Monument, designed in 1822 as a tribute to Scots who died in the Napoleonic Wars. Inspired by the Parthenon in Athens, the grand design was never finished—only twelve columns were built before funds ran out in 1829. The incomplete structure earned the nickname “Edinburgh’s Disgrace,” a reflection of public disappointment at the time.

But Calton Hill offers more than a striking skyline. It holds the Nelson Monument, where a time ball once dropped at 1 p.m. daily to help ships set their clocks, and the elegant Dugald Stewart Monument, honouring a key figure of the Scottish Enlightenment. Nearby is the Old Calton Burial Ground, where radical thinkers, philosophers like David Hume, and even a monument to American Civil War soldiers rest.
