Which Iconic Castle Shaped Scottish History Since the 1300s?

What is Urquhart Castle famous for? – Urquhart Castle is an impressive and historic landmark in Scotland’s Highlands. Located on the banks of Loch Ness, it has played a major role in Scottish history since the 1300s. The castle was originally built by the Pictish people and later taken over by Robert the Bruce in 1306 when he became King of Scots.

Throughout the 1300s, Urquhart was a strategic stronghold used during the Scots’ struggle for independence. In particular, it held out against the English forces in 1332 at a time when other highland castles had been taken over. This act of defiance earned Urquhart Castle a place in Scottish history.

Today, visitors can explore the ruins of Urquhart Castle and learn about its history. The castle features a great hall, chapel, kitchen and several towers which remain standing even after 700 years. Inside the walls, visitors might also find some artefacts from the 13th century.
