Who wants a Highland Coo?

Highland cows, or "Highland coos" as they're fondly known in Scotland, are undeniably charming with their shaggy coats and friendly expressions. But before you start dreaming of having one in your back garden, there are a few things to consider. These iconic cattle hail from the rugged Highlands of Scotland, where they've adapted to harsh weather with their thick, double-layered coats. While they may look like oversized teddy bears, they’re still large farm animals—mature bulls can weigh up to 800kg, and even the smallest coos stand at around 1.2 metres at the shoulder. Their size alone makes them unsuitable for most pet owners, especially those without ample land and experience in handling livestock.

Highland coos are typically friendly and curious, often forming strong bonds with their caretakers if raised in a social environment. However, they still require proper handling and plenty of space to roam. Unlike dogs or cats, these cattle aren't house pets—they need grazing land, secure fencing, and regular care to stay healthy. While they can make wonderful companions for those with farms or smallholdings, they’re not suited to suburban gardens or city living. If you’re captivated by their charm but lack the means to care for one, perhaps a visit to a Highland farm is the best way to enjoy these magnificent creatures up close. But why is this cow called Highland Coo…?
